Almost one fourth of world electricity consumption is for lighting purposes. In this context, inventing low power and long lasting light sources is necessary for saving energy. Solid state lighting refers to the study and applications of semiconductor devices that source and manipulate light, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers.
Use of LED lamps as a low power lighting source has steadily grown in the past decade. White light LED lamps have been possible due to the Nobel-prize winning invention of blue LED and continued improvements in LED luminosity and its long life. Organic LEDs (OLEDs) are also being developed as a low cost option for flexible displays and portable lighting applications. There are a number of fundamental and practical challenges before such products can be sustainable and widely available.
Here are our stories on our efforts to contribute to this radical way of lighting.
