About the workshop : The aim of the GOI is to create 85,000 trained semiconductor professionals to fill the global workforce deficit related to chip talent. SemiconIndia 2023 is the second edition of SemiconIndia themed around ‘Catalyzing India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem’ inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India. The SemiconIndia 2023 is the conference organized as a part of ISM by GoI to create a conducive environment for collaboration between the semiconductor industries and academia. SemiconIndia plays as a platform for knowledge sharing, and understanding investment opportunities, and showcases the immense potential and capabilities of India in the field of semiconductors.

About the workshop : The SemiX IIT Bombay initiative by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is a visionary effort to support the India Semiconductor Mission. While I have known about the SemiX, it took Vijay Parmar's persuasive invite to charm me into attending their event in Austin, Texas. The event was highly informative, showcasing the semiconductor work happening in India and how SemiX IIT Bombay is stepping up to support it from the academic side. They mentioned the training given to Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd. engineers as an example. Sunit Rikhi, ex-Intel (my former company), gave an energetic introduction and Prof. Swaroop Ganguly was articulate even though it was the wee hours of the morning for him in Mumbai. Prof. Sanjay Banerjee and Prof. Alex Q. Huang spoke as well. The audience was mostly from IIT Bombay, but there were quite a few from IIT Madras and other esteemed institutions. I was the only one from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. As Prof. Ganguly humorously said, "SemiX has been infiltrated."

About the workshop : The Centre for Semiconductor Technologies (SemiX) hosted a delegation from the Semiconductor Ecosystem Development Group (SEDG) of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture on February 9th. It was a wonderful experience to interact with them and brainstorm about future collaboration with SemiX towards semiconductor workforce development in India.

Title : A Roadmap for Disruptive Applications and Heterogeneous Integration

About the workshop : This talk will attempt to establish a roadmap for 2-Dimensional (2D) material-based Nanoelectronic technologies for beyond Si and other future/disruptive applications with a vision for the semiconductor industry to enable a universal technology platform for heterogeneous integration. The heterogeneous integration would involve integrating orthogonal capabilities such as different forms of computing (classical, neuromorphic and quantum), all forms of sensing, digital and analog memories, energy harvesting, etc. – all in a single chip using a universal technology platform. This talk will also cover the technological and fundamental challenges in pushing the 2D technology to the market, where the world stands today, and what gaps are required to be filled. Talking about the gaps, I will particularly touch base on the Metal (3D) to graphene/TMD (2D) contact engineering challenges, which has been considered as one of the most fundamental challenges towards harnessing the full potential of 2-dimensional materials. And, how the fundamental understanding of the contact’s quantum chemistry resulted in unique ways to engineer it, resulting into record transistor performance. Besides, I will talk about some of the fundamental process challenges which can unintentionally perturb the 2D channel’s electrical, optical and mechanical properties. In the end, I will talk about some of the reliability gaps, which are urgently required to be addressed and the fundamental understanding we have developed so far.

Besides the keynote addresses and a plenary session, the Summit consisted of 3 tracks: Research, Workforce Development and Entrepreneurship.

The content traces the evolution of neural networks, emphasizing their importance in hyperscale computing environments, exemplified by companies like Meta Inc. Key applications of neural networks in hyperscalers, such as data mining on social media, multilingual translation, and a diverse range of AI/ML workloads encompassing ranking algorithms, computer vision, and natural language processing, are explored. An understanding of this diverse workload spectrum is essential for grasping the specific challenges and advantages of chiplet technology. In the era of AI, the computational landscape has undergone a transformation, characterized by the distinction between sparse and dense computations. This presentation sheds light on the immense computational demands of training large language models (LLMs), which necessitate yottabytes of data and domain-specific accelerators. The central focus of this discussion revolves around the chiplet advantage. It examines how chiplets enable efficient memory connections and facilitate architectural modifications, making them pivotal in optimizing the performance and efficiency of AI/ML workloads within hyperscaler data centers. This talk offers valuable insights into the “why, what, and how” of chiplets for AI/ML applications in hyperscaler data centers.

About the workshop : Differentiated hardware tailored to the application requirements is absolutely essential to achieve optimal performance and energy efficiency. Creating domain-specific processors for given application needs is key to navigate challenging area-power-performance metrics in SoC designs. In this talk, we introduce Cadence Tensilica’s Xtensa processor and TIE (Tensilica Instruction Extensions) technology for developing Application Specific Instruction Processors and related software tools. This patented technology is around for more than two decades and is silicon proven across semiconductor nodes from 90nm to cutting edge 5nm, with more than billion chips shipped every year. TIE language can be used to design variety of processors like VLIW, SIMD, Vector floating point which are tailored for application domains like Audio, Radar, Wireless Communications, Computer Vision and AI.
